A shower chair is designed to be used in the shower (in a shower cubicle or within a wet room). It allows you to sit down whilst taking a shower. Some of these bathing aids have wheels, which allows the chair to be wheeled into position – this is particularly useful when you have a wet room. A shower commode chair is similar to a shower chair however, it features a cut out in the base and a potty below, allowing the chair to be also used as a commode (toilet).
Our dedicated team have spent many years working in the mobility aids and daily living products sector. They are very knowledgeable about the products we sell. They work with Kate Makin, our Occupational Therapist, to ensure that they provide the best advice when it comes to information about our thousands of mobility aid products.
These mobility aids allow someone to be seated whilst taking a shower, with shower commode chairs offering the benefit of doubling up as a commode (toilet aid), too.
Our extensive range enable you to sit down whilst showering – this is ideal if you are slightly unsteady on your feet or if you find it challenging to remain standing for any length of time.
Shower chairs offer independence whilst undertaking personal hygiene tasks and the shower chairs with wheels also allow for the item to be easily moved from room to room.
Many shower commode chairs are height adjustable and also wheeled which, when the potty (bucket) below is removed, allows this useful toileting aid to be wheeled to sit over the actual toilet bowl.
The main difference with shower chairs and shower commode chairs are whether the item is static or comes with wheels. The wheeled models tend to have lockable castor-style wheels which allow the brakes to be locked into position when the shower chair is in the right location for the shower, ensuring that it does not move when in use.
If you find that you prefer to sit down whilst taking a shower, and you have the space to accommodate this bathroom aid, then a shower chair or shower commode chair may provide you with the extra support you are looking for.
When you are considering buying a shower chair or shower commode chair, do remember that they take up quite a bit of space in the home, so do check that you have enough space to accommodate one before purchasing.
The other point to consider is if you require one with wheels. Wheels are ideal for wet rooms when you want to move from the wet room to another room, such as a bedroom, to dress. It also allows the shower chair, or shower commode chair, to be moved easily out of the way when someone else wants to take a shower.
